How the SuperScales book was assembled from discovery, verification, production, and design — and what the next volumes in the series will cover.
The SuperScales book is the endpoint of a process that began not with a publishing plan but with a question: what does the Melodic Minor Ascending scale do across an entire key center when all 12 transpositions are considered simultaneously? From that question, through computational verification, through production engineering, through ear training curriculum design, to a published book with 864 drones, 2,521 études, and chord charts in all 12 keys — this is the journey this final article traces.

The SuperScales book documents MMA’s relationship to dominant-function chords. Two companion volumes are in development:
The Larger Picture — One Discovery, Many Connections
The SuperScales discovery is not an isolated finding. It connects to every part of the larger musical and pedagogical system that this series has described: the key center ear training system from the Banacos lineage, the hexatonic trichord pair work of the Sound Cells series, the computational production pipeline, the Cloudflare R2 distribution infrastructure, and the STEAM education articles that bring all of it to new audiences.
The MMA scale was always there. The relationship between its 12 transpositions and all dominant-function chords in a key center was always there. The key center framework, developed over decades of practice and teaching, made the question formulable. The computational tools made the answer verifiable. The production pipeline made it teachable. And the STEAM articles — this series — make it findable.
The Banacos lineage traces back through Madame Chaloff to Vengerova, through Czerny and Beethoven to Haydn, through Porpora to Scarlatti. Centuries of musical knowledge, transmitted person to person, accumulated and refined. The SuperScales discovery is the latest layer of that accumulation — a new relationship found in familiar material by asking a question from a reference frame that the tradition itself made possible.
The scale was always there. This series explains what it was hiding, and what it reveals when you look at it from the right vantage point.
Discovery, verification, production, publication — the research cycle in music
The research cycle
Intuition → hypothesis → verification → analysis → production → publication. The SuperScales project follows the same cycle as scientific research: from an intuitive sense that something interesting is here, through rigorous verification, to a form that can be shared and built upon.
Tacit to explicit
The MMA properties were tacit knowledge — present in the practice of experienced musicians who used the scale effectively without being able to articulate why. The computational verification and the book make tacit knowledge explicit — transferable to students who haven’t spent decades developing the intuition.
Lineage and transmission
The Banacos lineage is a chain of tacit knowledge transmission — from teacher to student, accumulating and refining over centuries. The SuperScales book is an attempt to make one crucial node of that chain explicit enough to survive transmission through text and audio rather than only through personal instruction.
Discovery as invitation
A discovery published is an invitation — to other researchers, practitioners, and students to verify, extend, critique, and build on the finding. The SuperScales book is an invitation to the musical community to engage with MMA’s universality property and what it means for how the scale is practiced and taught.
The Series Ends Here — The Work Continues
This is the final article in the 20-part SuperScales STEAM series. The series has traced the MMA discovery across six disciplines: the science of how it was found and what it means for ear training, the mathematics of its interval structure and combinatorial properties, the physics of its acoustic alignment with the harmonic series, the technology of its computational verification and production pipeline, and the engineering of its drone system and publication infrastructure.
The discovery is documented. The book is published. The drones and études are available. SuperScales II and III are in development.
